The History of the Chapel

Pontcysyllte Chapel Tearoom was formerly Bryn Seion Chapel. It was built with local Ruabon brick in 1902 for the Calvinistic Methodist movement (later Presbyterian Church of Wales).
It is built in the Classical style with a gable entry planand with a large arch in the facade.

It replaced the earlier Pontcysyllte Chapel that was built in 1824.

It is a grade II listed building. Bryn Seion Chapel was listed because it is a well-preserved example of late, but typical non-conformist chapel design that has strong regional character due to its locally produced red brick and terra-cotta.

Bryn Seion Chapel was the focal point of the village and many locals were married, baptised and attended Sunday school here.

The Chapel closed its doors after a final service in 1992.

B
y 1994 Bryn Seion had been converted for commercial use as an antiques shop.
Then, the
Chapel remained derelict for 1o years.

Following an extensive refurbishment program it was brought back to life and reopened as a tearoom in February 2018.
